Visit The Mississippi National River And Recreation Area

Nestled in the middle of a lively urban setting is a 72-mile park that offers plenty of outdoor fun. It’s known as the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and it is just fourteen minutes from Valley Creek Apartments. No matter the time of year, there are activities for everyone. They include:

Geocaching – Geocaching is an exciting outdoor game where participants use GPS receivers to discover caches in unique hiding places. According to the park’s website, a typical cache is a small container with a log book and a possible trinket. Places to explore include East Coon Rapids Dam and Fort Snelling State Park. In the wintertime, you can wear snowshoes as you search for treasures.

Fishing – Anglers can enjoy boat and shoreline fishing near the Mississippi River in the northern suburbs. The floodplain lakes contain trout, northern pike, panfish, and largemouth bass. Suggested fishing locations include Cenaiko Lake, Pickerel Lake, and Rebecca Lake.

Hiking – The hiking trails were chosen for their incredible historic and natural values. One of the trails is the Grey Cloud Dunes Scientific and Natural Area that offers hikers picturesque views of the Mississippi River.

Eagle Watching – During the winter months, eagles search below the Mississippi’s locks and dams to find prey in the open water. For one of the best viewing spots, follow the trail in Hasting’s River Flats Park to an observation platform.
