Tour the James J. Hill House

Have you ever driven by an incredible home and wished you could see inside? Well there are a few mansions near Valley Creek Apartments where you can do just that. One of which is the James J. Hill House. This National Historic Landmark was once the home of James J. Hill, builder of the Great Northern Railway. Finished in 1891, this 36,500 square foot, five-story home includes an art gallery, twenty-two fireplaces, thirteen bathrooms, and beautiful mahogany woodwork. At the time, it was the largest and most expensive home in the state.

James and his wife Mary raised ten children in this amazing home and the Drawing Room hosted four of their daughters’ weddings. When James passed away in 1916, Mary maintained the place until she died five years later. Today the Minnesota Historical Society owns the home and visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as:

Summit Avenue Walking Tour – This ninety minute walking tour takes place every Saturday and Sunday in September. It starts at the James J. Hill House and covers 1.5 miles along Summit Avenue to highlight the street’s Gilded-Age mansions.

Victorian Ghost Stories – On certain dates in October, you can hear costumed actors read 19th century ghost stories. After the readings, you can take a tour of the home and sip hot cider.

Hill House Chamber Players – The Hill House Chamber Players entertain guests in the Hill House Art Gallery. This season they present “Women of Note,” and performances begin at 7:30 p.m. During intermission, you can enjoy complimentary refreshments and after the performance, you can tour the home. Upcoming dates include October 10 and 17.
